So the first thing we might do as an introduction is remembering the vowels with our children.
How can we do it? We can connect each vowel with a possition expression, using a box and a puppet and moving it. I mean:
- For /a/ put the puppet at the side of the box.
- For /e/ make the puppet wobble on the edge of the box.
- For /i/ put the puppet in the box.
- For /o/ put the puppet on the box.
- For /u/ put the puppet under the box.
The children can pretend that one of their hands is the box and the other one the puppet. Call out the vowels while they do the correct action.
Going into the main point, the next thing to do is write a couple of sentences in the board and ask the children if they can identify the nouns, just to revise the previous lessons.
After the revision, we may ask the students what they think is wrong in the sentences and try to correct them.
Now we have to explain to them that in general, if a noun starts with a vowel we use "an" and if it starts with a consonant we use "a". Then, we can also explain that if it makes sense to put "a", "an" or "the" in front of a word, then the word is probably a noun.
Finally, as an activity to practice, we can provide the children with different pictures and tell them to write the noun and "a" or "an" in front of it.
This activity has many possibilities because it can be oral, writen, whole group, small groups, pairs...
